About ISO 17025 Accreditation

ISO/IEC 17025 is a standard very similar to that of ISO 9001, in the fact that it governs how your organization goes about its quality systems, but pertains specifically to calibration and testing laboratories. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines this document as:

ISO/IEC 17025:2005 specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling. It covers testing and calibration performed using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

As the definition states, this quality procedure specifically relates to testing and calibration laboratories. Although it is very similar to ISO 9001, it is quite a bit more strict. In fact, accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 automatically grants you accreditation to ISO 9001. In other words, the document covers everything that ISO 9001 does, plus many caveats pertaining to testing and calibration laboratories.

It is designed to guide laboratories in developing their management system for quality, administrative and technical operations. It governs everything from how a calibration laboratory needs to set up its quality manual, to how it needs to go about approving new calibration methods.

Benefits of ISO 17025 Accredited Calibration

The process for a calibration laboratory to become accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard is not an easy one. This elaborate vetting process ensures that when you are purchasing calibration services from a laboratory that will deliver on the requirements you deserve.

Accreditation to this standard requires a very stringent quality management system of the accredited laboratory (view our quality manual). What does all of this regulation provide you, the end-user? Why should an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration provider be the choice to calibrate and care for the equipment vital to your organization?

The answer is simple: confidence.

By selecting a third party calibration laboratory accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard to perform your calibration services, you are gaining confidence that the calibration being performed is reliable, freeing your mind to worry about other, more mission-critical concerns. This confidence comes from several sources:

Ultimately, this grants you the confidence discussed above.

Confidence in accuracy. Confidence in repeatability. Confidence in customer service.
